Vicki Ruthe Hahn will present her most recently researched topic of the Underground Railroad (URR). Her research covers WI and IL (although not as well documented) and how the URR came to be.

This presentation is suitable for teens, adults and seniors. No sign up required, no library card needed. Lidded beverages are allowed, however, food is not. The presentation itself will last about 1 hour, 15 minutes. There will be time (about 15 minutes) after the presentation for a question/answer session. Vicki Ruthe Hahn summarizes the presentation as follows:

“Discover the history of attitudes and laws that led up to the Underground Railroad and the Civil War.  From 1619 to the end of the Civil War enslaved African Americans resisted through escape (from wherever slavery existed) and flight to gain their freedom. Explore mysteries that are just now coming to light about the widespread networks of secret routes and hidden safe houses used by (at least 30,000 - 100,000 plus) African Americans to escape into free states and from there to Canada.  Wisconsin and Illinois (not as well documented) will be covered, as will misconceptions about the Underground Railroad.”

Ms. Hahn specializes in consultation, research, and program presentations, holds an MLS degree and is retired from Beloit Public Library. She is the founder of Stateline Genealogy Club, LLC and blog creator of statelinegenealogyclub.wordpress.com
