Event highlighting Henrietta Leavitt & other pioneering women astronomers – from the Artists’ Ensemble play “Silent Sky” – and women astronomers now, starting with a short reading from the play.
As a woman “computer” at the Harvard Observatory in 1895, Henrietta Leavitt wasn’t allowed to touch a telescope, but she went on to discover a new law about variable stars that transformed astronomy. This presentation & discussion will focus on the play “Silent Sky” about Henrietta, the book The Glass Universe: How the Ladies of the Harvard Observatory Took the Measure of the Stars, and observations about women in the field today. The panelists include Deepshikha Shukla, Ph.D. and Deborah Breiter, Ph.D. of Rockford University; Marj Christen and Karen Christen of Astro-Physics, Inc.; and Carolyn Cadigan, Lisa Turbyville, & Charlie Rasmann of Artists’ Ensemble Theater. All are encouraged to see the play “Silent Sky,” and for further inspiration to check out the book The Glass Universe, available from RPL. (After the introduction & short reading, youth ages 8-12 will cross the hall to the “Look Up!” program, for which registration is required.)
