Inspired by historical figures & original creations, this novel presents two struggles for freedom - abolitionism and women's rights - voiced by two powerful narrators, shaping each other's destinies.
All are encouraged to read this novel and come to discuss or listen, in observance of African American History Month, Women's History Month, and the Women's Suffrage Centennial. Set in early 19th century Charleston, the character Sarah narrates the experience inspired by Sarah Grimke, a real-life (with her sister Angelina) abolitionist and feminist; and Hetty "Handful" narrates the powerfully-imagined experience of a young slave in the Grimke household. The story begins on Sarah's 11th birthday, when Handful - age 10 - is presented to her as her own slave. "We follow their remarkable journeys over the next 35 years, as both strive for a life of their own, ... forming a complex relationship," also involving Handful's mother Charlotte and characters inspired by the historical figures Angelina Grimke and Denmark Vesey, a free black man. Although set before the Women's Suffrage movement, this novel's themes help to set the stage.
