Lawn of the Library

On the lawn of the Library, published author, Karla Clark, and artist, Lisa Greco will lead a group of young writers in a workshop to write and illustrate their own personal short stories.

From 10am to Noon, published author, Karla Clark, and artist, Lisa Greco will lead a group of young writers in a workshop to write and illustrate their own personal short stories. In light of our current circumstances, the workshop will focus on stories that depict the unique way each of us has been getting though this unprecedented time here in our community. The young writers will be given new composition notebooks and spread out on the lawn of the library. All safety precautions, including masks and social distancing, will be strictly adhered to. The instructors will move through out, helping each writer develop a story and illustrate a picture to go with it. Each notebook and personal story will be a keepsake that participants can share on social media as well as take with them to share with friends and family giving them an authentic arts experience which they may not have had before.

At Noon, we would like to invite families to bring a small lunch and a blanket, to sit and enjoy some Live Outdoor Storytelling on the lawn of the library. Karla Clark will read her clever, rhyming picture book, You Be Mommy and members of the [usual] Suspects Theater Company will perform short humorous skits about the importance of reading and writing. There will also be an opportunity for any of our young writers to share their new short stories with the crowd and we will finish the event with a raffle for a signed copy of Karla’s wonder book. We expect the activities to wrap up by 1pm.

About the library

Officially opened on May 24, 1923, the Montague Branch Library is the Library’s oldest existing branch library facility. Located on the corner of Winnebago and Montague Streets, this branch serves people living on the south and west sides of Rockford. The two-story brick building has been lovingly restored and contains many of the original oak bookcases and a fireplace. The Montague Branch offers an expanded children’s space including a dedicated play room, a wireless computer area, a classroom and the Constance V. Lane Community Room.
