Ars Poetica is a salon that will look at writing about poetry, poets, and why we write. We welcome our first salon guest, Susan Azar Porterfield, who will share her insights on the art and practice of poetry. Susan Azar Porterfield has three books of poetry: In the Garden of Our Spines, Kibbe (Mayapple Press) and Dirt, Root, Silk, which won the Cider Press Review Editor’s Prize. Her work has appeared in The Georgia Review, Barrow Street, Mid-American Review, North American Review, Crab Orchard Review, Nimrod, Rhino, Puerto del Sol, Poetry Ireland Review, Slipstream, Room, Ambit, and elsewhere. She's the editor of Zen, Poetry, the Art of Lucien Stryk (Ohio UP) and has written on poetical subjects for Poets & Writers, The Writer’s Chronicle, Translation Review, The Midwest Journal of the Modern Language Association. She is the recipient of an Illinois Arts Counsel Award for Poetry and a Fulbright grant to Lebanon.
Poet Laureate of Rockford, Christine Swanberg, and Youth Poet Laureate, Jocelyn Kuntz will discuss their poetic journeys and will share some of their poetry. Christine will provide a few mini-prompts for inspiration.

The 36,000 sq.ft. Hart Interim Library opened Dec. 2, 2017 and serves as the Rockford Public Library’s main downtown facility. The newly renovated space boasts a 2nd story Children’s Area with dedicated computer lab, Read, Play, Learn program room, and creative play space, a Maker Lab with access to 3D printers and scanners and small board computers a sizable Young Adult Zone with gaming center, adult computer lab, local history room, and 5 private meeting and study rooms accommodating groups of 2-8 people.
