Stop by East Branch to safely view the annular solar eclipse. View with safety glasses, crackers and colanders while it happens! Canceled if overcast. Meet outside in the grassy area behind East.
Never try to look directly at the sun at any time, especially during a solar eclipse. Doing so can cause permanent eye damage in as little as 2 seconds! Learn why eye protection is necessary and required while you learn how to view the eclipse safely. The entire annular (or ring) solar eclipse will last about 3 hours (starting at 10:34AM and ending at 1:20PM). Best viewing times in Rockford will be between 11:30AM - 1:00PM. In fact, the Adler Planetarium in Chicago has named the maximum viewing time (where one will see the maximum amount of the sun covered or shadowed by the moon) at 11:55AM. Unfortunately, we will only see a partial eclipse and not the entire 'ring of fire' because Rockford is not near the center of where the shadow falls. We will still see some amazing views, though!
Meet outside in the grassy area behind the library. If it is overcast or extremely cloudy, viewing will not be possible and event will be canceled.
East Branch is located at 6685 E. State St., Rockford.
